Babies receive a passive immunity from their mothers during pregnancy and this is also supported through breastfeeding for a while. However, it doesn't last long!
A baby's immune system develops and strengthens through being exposed to germs and bug and their body responding. This builds throughout their first years as they interact with the world around them and other children.
However, lockdowns have meant babies and young children are NOT being exposed to those germs and bugs. Plus we are being overly 'clean' on a monumental level!
So, what does this mean?
Well it means babies and children are more at risk from common infections because their immune system isn't as strong as it would normally be. This is reinforced by A&E units reporting a rapid rise in cases of children attending with very high fevers due to infections.
So, what can you do as a parent?
First of all, if you are pregnant, make sure you are taking a good multi-vitamin and eating a good diet with at least 5 fruit and veg - if you're struggling to do that I also recommend using the Juice Plus supplements.
If you have a baby or toddler/child then make sure they too are taking a good baby/children's vitamin and have plenty of fruit and veg in their diet. Again, Juice Plus have a children's chewable version or you can use my 'hidden veg' sauce recipes to add in to their favourite meals.
Boost their immune system by playing outside in the dirt and gradually expose them to others. Remember, sunshine (vitamin D) is vital for our immune system and don't be afraid to get a little dirty - it all washes off in the bath at the end of the day.
